A UNIQUE SERVICE

BourneThisWay is a unique service offering support within Eastbourne and surrounding areas.

BourneThisWay creates a safe space for LGBTQ+people and their children to meet, share experiences, advice and support.

Many LGBTQ+ people have experienced severe bullying, hate crime, isolation and rejection in the community due to their sexuality or gender recognition.  Sometimes society makes assumptions that only heterosexual people want to start a family, which of course is not the case.

Our aims are to provide support and guidance in accessing health and social care services without discrimination. We want to tackle social isolation and loneliness which can lead to poor mental health, substance misuse and suicide.

We aim to enhance parents and children’s motivation, confidence, self-esteem and overall well-being and sense of belonging.

There is strong evidence that suggests that feeling close and valued by other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world we live in. It is clear that social relationships are critical for acting as a buffer against mental health. There is a greater need for the vulnerable and lonely LGBT+ community because there are higher rates of suicide, self-harm, anxiety and depression.

BTW has an activity programme to promote well being and a sense of togetherness. Even during the last year we have managed to meet online and organise a number of activities to reach out to the group and support one another.

5 STEPS

BTW embraces the importance of a healthy mind and body and wanted to create a 5 step ethos for our community to reflect this.

We developed our “5 steps to well-being” detailed below.

CONNECT

Gatherings – to encourage a sense of belonging – in person when guidelines allow via zoom until then.

BE ACTIVE

Recreation – Stay active; fun parent and child fitness sessions (online baby yoga, parent/toddler workouts etc)

LEARN NEW SKILLS

Opportunity – Learn from experiences within the group, and to have the opportunity to undertake an on-line well being class (face to face when allowed)

BE PRESENT

Unwind – Restore our mental clarity by participating in mindfulness sessions with a qualified counselor

GIVE TO OTHERS

Participate – Share personal stories to help, support and encourage others. Can you help setting up an activity for all to enjoy (on line!)
